Johannes Schöllhorn

This German composer, born in 1962, graduated in composition after studies with Klaus Huber, Emmanuel Nunes, and Mathias Spahlinger. He continued his education at Péter Eötvös’ courses. His output comprises chamber, vocal, orchestral, and theatre music.

Schöllhorn’s works have been performed by numerous excellent ensembles and orchestras, including Ensemble Modern, Ensemble intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien, Musikfabrik, L’Instant Donné, Remix Ensemble, ensemble recherche, Neue Vocalsolisten, Ensemble Ascolta, Das Neue Ensemble, WDR and SWR radio symphony orchestras, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, and others.

The artist’s numerous accolades include the Comité de lecture de l’Ensemble intercontemporain (1997) and Praetorius Musikpreis (2009). His chamber opera Les petites filles modèles was premiered in 1997 at the Opéra Bastille, and has since frequently been staged in Paris as well as other French cities.

Schöllhorn is also active as an educator. He was a lecturer at the Musikhochschule Zürich-Winterthur and the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, as well as professor of composition and director of the Institut für Neue Musik at Cologne’s Hochschule für Musik und Tanz. Since 2017 he has been a professor of composition and director of the Institut für Neue Musik at the Musikhochschule Freiburg. He has taught numerous courses in many cities of Europe, as well as China, Japan, Chile, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
