Krzysztof Wołek

Composer, improviser, author of multimedia installations, and educator. He studied at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice and the Koninklijk Conservatorium in the Hague, as well as completing a doctorate in composition and computer music at the University of Chicago. He is currently a composition teacher at the University of Louisville, as well as head of UofL’s computer music studios. He has been a guest lecturer at the Academies of Music in Kraków and Katowice, Columbia College Chicago, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Indiana University, and others. Member of the ‘Warsaw Autumn’International Festival of Contemporary Music programme committee since 2009. Wołek’s works have been presented at contemporary music and art festivals in Europe, North America, and Asia. He has been commissioned by festivals (‘Warsaw Autumn’, the Festival of Premieres ‘Polish Modern Music’, ‘Codes’ Festival of Traditional and Avant-Garde Music), as well as institutions (the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition, Siemens Foundation) and societies (SCI Society of Composers, Inc., ASCAP American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers). He has received grants and fellowships from the Universities of Chicago and Louisville as well as scholarships from the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage. As a composer and improviser, he has collaborated with, among others, Ensemble OMN, Agata Zubel, Marek Chołoniewski, Jakob Kullberg, Defibrillator duo, Dominik Strycharski, and Małgorzata Walentynowicz. His extremely varied output comprises acoustic and electronic music, numerous installations and multimedia-related works. His interdisciplinary approach results in projects that involve, apart from musicians, also visual artists and dancers. His accolades include an award in the Concours International de Musique et d’Art Sonore Electroacoustiques in Bourges for Mobile Variations and an ASCAP competition prize for Eppur si muove.
