The instrumental concerto, one of the oldest musical genres, has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries. Composers of today still frequently exploit the concept of opposing the orchestra to the soloist. The latest ANAKLASIS release, VARIOUS FORMS OF FRICTION, comprises three original concertos composed by Krzysztof Wołek, performed here by Ensemble OMN in dialogue with soloists: successively, a pianist, a cellist, and a bass clarinettist. The album will enter distribution on 22nd September.

The concertos contained on VARIOUS FORMS OF FRICTION have been presented here as parts of a larger whole, but they can also function as independent compositions. The eponymous piece, written for its current performer Jakob Kullberg, derives its title from the composer’s belief that creating a work of art calls for friction on both the conceptual and purely personal level. Krzysztof Wołek’s entire creative career to date has in fact depended on the clash and friction of various influences and expressive means. ‘I tend to get inspired by an ever-wider palette of music and of art in general, not necessarily related to the so-called Western classical music or art traditions. I also very frequently derive inspiration from the achievements of the human mind and scientific discoveries,’ Wołek admits. He creates works for various acoustic lineups, electroacoustic music, multimedia installations, as well as initiating interdisciplinary projects comprising elements of video art, dance, etc.

The other two concertos on VARIOUS FORMS OF FRICTION, released in our PORTRAITS series, are Motions, Stases for piano and large ensemble (with Małgorzata Walentynowicz as soloist) and Open/Close for bass clarinet and large ensemble (soloist: Michele Marelli). The soloists perform here with Ensemble OMN under Szymon Bywalec.

The album is part of our blue PORTRAITS series of releases dedicated individually to the works of contemporary (20th- and 21st-century) Polish composers. It will be available on CDs and in streaming services from 22nd September onwards.

On the same day, a special PWM Edition concert will be held at Warsaw’s Chopin University of Music as part of the 66th ‘Warsaw Autumn’ International Festival of Contemporary Music. The programme includes, apart from compositions by Jagoda Szmytka, Paweł Hendrich, and Marcin Stańczyk, also Open/Close for bass clarinet and large ensemble, with Michele Marelli as soloist and Ensemble OMN conducted by Szymon Bywalec.
