A Dutch trumpet player; since 1993 – a member of Cologne’s Musikfabrik ensemble. He has also embarked on an international solo career. His repertoire includes works dedicated to him as their first performer by such eminent composers as Wolfgang Rihm, Georg Friedrich Haas, Péter Eötvös, John Zorn, Agata Zubel, and Hanna Kulenty. For many years he collaborated with Karlheinz Stockhausen on that composer’s numerous projects, for instance playing the solo part in Michaels Reise and premiering numerous solo parts in Stockhausen’s greatest works, the cycles Licht and Klang. Blaauw performs with the best orchestras in Europe and worldwide, as well as recording for the most important record labels. His sixth solo album, entitled Angels, was awarded the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 2014.

Apart from solo performances, Blaauw is the leader of many chamber music projects, such as Monochrome for trumpet ensemble, inspired by the music of La Monte Young and exploring various trumpet techniques and sound configurations. Blaauw is also the leader of the Global Breath international research-and-concert project, which makes use of interviews with trumpet pioneers as well as archive recordings. He is actively involved as an educator, teaching, among others, a trumpet class at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse, and recently – a master class at the Hague’s Koninklijk Conservatorium.
