Performers
Marcin Zdunik
He studied cello with Andrzej Bauer at Warsaw’s Chopin University of Music (an honours degree and the medal ‘Magna cum Laude’), with Julius Berger at the Leopold-Mozart-Zentrum Augsburg, as well as musicology at the University of Warsaw. He won the Witold Lutosławski International Cello Competition in Warsaw (2007) and represented Polish Radio at the International Forum of Young Performers New Talent in Bratislava, winning its main prize (2008). Zdunik’s repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to contemporary; he is also a music composer.
He has appeared in the world’s main concert halls including New York’s Carnegie Hall, with leading orchestras and chamber ensembles.
Invitations to prestigious festivals in Poland and abroad have included London’s BBC Proms, the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, and the Warsaw Autumn. With Janusz Wawrowski they created the project Ultimate Paganini, as part of which Zdunik composed the cello part for Niccolò Paganini’s 24 Caprices.
The album featuring Joseph Haydn’s two cello concertos won the Fryderyk 2010. With Aleksandra Świgut, Zdunik recorded works by Robert Schumann, with Sinfonia Varsovia under Andres Mustonen – Fantasia by Mieczysław Wajnberg, in a duo with Aleksander Dębicz – the album Bach Stories, with Maria Sławek – Rejoice.
Zdunik teaches cello classes at the Gdańsk Academy of Music and his alma mater in Warsaw. In 2020 he received the Decoration of Honour ‘Meritorious for Polish Culture’, in 2021 – the state title of professor.
