JOSÉ MARIA FLORÊNCIO

Born in Fortaleza (Brazil), living since 1985 in Poland. He studied at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, New York’s Juilliard School of Music, the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, and the Chopin Academy (now University) of Music in Warsaw (conducting with Henryk Czyż).

Florêncio has held the posts of conductor at Łódź Grand Theatre and the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw; music director of Wrocław Opera, Poznań Grand Theatre, and the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk; general and artistic director of Poznań Philharmonic and the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra and Choir in Kraków; titular conductor of the orchestra of Theatro Municipal de São Paulo; head and conductor of Capella Bydgostiensis. He has appeared with Israel Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, and others.

His repertoire ranges from the Baroque to contemporary, including numerous works for the stage. He has premiered many compositions, such as Offenbach / Małecki’s A Brazilian in Paris (at Warsaw’s Teatr Wielki), Theodorakis’ opera Electra at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg and Bruzdowicz’s Tides and Waves for the opening of the Barcelona Summer Olympics (1992). He has recorded extensively for record labels (nearly two dozen albums) as well as the radio and television. His accolades include the Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
