Halina Słonicka
Having graduated from a construction industry high school in Białystok and in architecture from the Warsaw University of Technology, she eventually decided to dedicate herself to a singing career. She studied voice with Magdalena Halfter in secondary school and at Warsaw’s State Higher School of Music (1955–1960). Simultaneously she performed as a soloist in the Polish Army Song and Dance Ensemble.
She won prizes in vocal competitions in Vercelli, Moscow, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Toulouse, Geneva, and Rio de Janeiro. In 1957–1987 she was a soloist at Warsaw Opera (the later Teatr Wielki–National Opera). Her repertoire comprised approximately thirty parts in works by Verdi, Bizet, Monteverdi, Mozart, Puccini, Weill, Szymanowski, Bogusławski,
Moniuszko, and others. She sang in the production of Moniuszko’s The Haunted Manor that inaugurated the rebuilt seat of Teatr Wielki in 1965. She also guest performed on other stages in Poland and abroad (Berlin, Budapest). Her concert repertoire included great vocal-instrumental works as well as songs, from the Italian Baroque to Szymanowski.
From 1980 she taught at the Białystok branch of Warsaw’s Fryderyk Chopin Academy (now – University of Music).
