Andrzej Bauer
This versatile cellist feels equally at home in classical as in improvised music. He graduated from Kazimierz Michalik’s class at the Łódź Academy of Music. As a Witold Lutosławski scholarship holder, he studied with William Pleeth in London. Prize winner in the ARD International Music Competition in Munich (1992) and the Prague Spring International Music Competition (1989), recipient of the European Parliament and European Council awards (1990).
Bauer has performed in recitals and as a soloist with leading symphony and chamber orchestras throughout Europe, as well as in the United States and Japan. His albums have won such record awards as the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. 2000 saw the first (2CD) Polish release of J.S. Bach’s complete cello suites (CD Accord), which won the Fryderyk Award of the Polish Phonographic Academy for the same year.
Bauer’s repertoire includes many of the most recent compositions, including numerous works specially dedicated to him. He received the Orpheus 2006 Award for his Cellotronicum (recital for cello and multimedia), in the version performed at the Warsaw Autumn. In 2012–2015 he was responsible for Polish Radio’s concert cycle Trans-Fuzja, fusing different styles of performance and improvisation with computer technology. He is the founder of Warsaw Cellonet Group as well as founder and artistic director of Chain Ensemble.
