MICHELE MARELLI

Clarinettist, basset horn virtuoso, composer, educator, and painter; artistic director of Biennale Koper contemporary music festival in Slovenia. He graduated from Giacomo Soave’s clarinet class at the Conservatorio Antonio Vivaldi in Alessandria, studied electronic music composition at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica Ottorino Respighi in Latina, and developed his knowledge and skills with, among others, Alan Hacker and Alain Damiens. At the age of eighteen, he met Karlheinz Stockhausen, who regularly engaged him as a soloist. Marelli premiered and recorded many of the German composer’s works, later released on multi-award-winning albums. The musician has also collaborated with such composers as György Kurtàg, Marco Stroppa, Helmut Lachenmann, Franco Donatoni, Kaija Saariaho, Rebecca Saunders, Stefano Gervasoni, Fabio Nieder, Sylvano Bussotti, and Alberto Colla. The artist’s achievements have been recognised with numerous accolades, including an International Classical Music Awards 2017 nomination for his critically acclaimed original debut album (Decca 2016), six awards of the Stockhausen Stiftung für Musik, the prestigious Italian decoration ‘Una vita nella musica’ (2014), and, previously, a prize in the International Competition for Contemporary Chamber Music in Kraków (2004).
