THE SILESIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

This is the youngest of the three orchestras operating at the Henryk Mikołaj Górecki Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice. The Orchestra was founded by Jan Wincenty Hawel in 1981 as an ensemble consisting of the then alumni of the Katowice Academy of Music. The Orchestra’s current artistic director is Piotr Pławner. Boasting a vast repertoire, the Orchestra presents, apart from classical masterpieces, also less frequently performed works as well as arrangements of chamber music by such composers as Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Pyotr Tchaikowsky, and Dmitri Shostakovich. Appearing under such renowned masters of the baton as Paul Esswood, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, and Marek Moś, the Orchestra has also shared the stage with soloists such as Ivan Monighetti, Kevin Kenner, Garrick Ohlson, Eugen Indjic, Bruno Canino, Marianna Vasilyeva, Wolfgang Güttler, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Krzysztof Jakowicz, Kaja Danczowska, Agata Szymczewska, Leszek Możdżer, and Andrzej Jagodziński. The Silesian Chamber Orchestra’s international renown has brought it invitations to perform at numerous festivals and in famous European concert halls. Its critically and publicly acclaimed discography includes a number of titles nominated for Fryderyk Awards in both the classical and popular music categories. Its recording of Paweł Łukaszewski’s Missa de Maria a Magdala (2013) won the prestigious Choc de Classica and Orphée d’Or.
