YAROSLAV SHEMET

Conductor, academic teacher at the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk. An active conductor since age 13, he currently serves as artistic director of the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice and deputy director for music of the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk. Previously he also held the posts of principal guest conductor to the Neue Philharmonie Hamburg and chief conductor of Lviv National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra (INSO-Lviv). His conducting engagements have taken him, apart from Ukraine, to Sweden, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, China, and Poland, where he has led such orchestras as FOK Prague Symphony, Philharmonie der Nationen, Staatsorchester Braunschweig, the Sinfonia Varsovia, NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, the Polish Baltic Philharmonic, and Poznań Philharmonic. He has shared the stage with such outstanding soloists as Lars Danielsson, Sonya Yoncheva, and Roman Simović, among others. Regularly sought-after as an opera conductor, Shemet made his debut as a music director (for Georges Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles, 2018) at the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk, where he is now the deputy director for music, responsible for the musical component of such productions as Karol Szymanowski’s King Roger, Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito. He has also collaborated with the Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre and conducted spectacles at the Silesian Opera in Bytom. In 2023 he received a nomination for the ‘Polityka’s Passport’ Award.
