Five years of operations, fifty reasons to celebrate. ANAKLASIS birthday comes in November – time to sum up the label’s presence in the music record market.
Nearly Fifty Reasons to CelebrateANAKLASIS is a platform for daring presentations of the most engaging phenomena in Polish contemporary music – but not only. The label’s large catalogue comprises nearly 50 CD, vinyl, and audiovisual releases, grouped into 6 thematic series: REVISION, SOUNDS, HERITAGE, PORTRAITS, OPERA, and IMAGES. The label presents albums individually dedicated to masters of 20th- and 21st-century Polish music. It also initiates and encourages contemporary artists’ experimentation in the border zone between various genres and styles. It restores archival recordings, carefully remastered and published with detailed commentary.
ANAKLASIS keeps record of what is currently happening in Polish music, and of what happened in the 20th century; of what irritates but also what fascinates us. This flagship project of PWM Edition concerns the musical past, on the one hand, but it also indicates directions for the future. This is how Dr Daniel Cichy, editor in chief of PWM Edition, sums up the label’s profile.
Praise and Awards at Home and AbroadANAKLASIS has many prestigious awards to its name. Its releases are presented at major cultural events in Poland and abroad. The label boasts 15 Fryderyk nominations and 6 Fryderyk Awards of Poland’s Phonographic Academy. Our black (CD and LP) OPERA series, featuring outstanding works for voices and instruments that venture beyond the tradition-sanctified concept of the opera as a genre, has won special recognition among the Fryderyk Award jury members. PWM Edition’s record label has also won appreciation in other countries, including France, where the Académie Charles Cros awarded its Coup de coeur prize to two albums, ANA 014 POLISH HEROINES OF MUSIC and ANA 024 CONCERTOS (2021, 2023), whereas titles from the blue PORTRAITS and green SOUNDS series were selected as Choc de Classica of the French Classica magazine (2023).
For one of their ANAKLASIS albums, ANA 012 DRACH. DRAMMA PER MUSICA, Aleksander Nowak and Szczepan Twardoch received the 2021 O!Lśnienia Cultural Award of Onet.pl and the City of Cracow. Other ANAKLASIS titles won nominations for the same award: Adam Bałdych Quintet and Agata Szymczewska (ANA 020 LEGEND) as well as Agata Zubel, Cezary Duchnowski and Andrzej Bauer (ANA 009 E-ŚPIEWNIK).
Live EncountersANAKLASIS stands not only for music records, but also for live encounters with the artists and their music. The label has marked its presence at such major events in Poland as Jazztopad, the ‘Warsaw Autumn’ International Festival of Contemporary Music, the Capital of Polish Language, Summer Jazz Festival, Katowice Culture Nature, as well as the 16th Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition.
The project ANAKLASIS IN JAPAN, which took place in the spring of 2023, involved concert presentations of our orange REVISIONS series in Tokyo’s leading clubs and concert halls, featuring Adam Pierończyk (ANA 022 SZYMANOWSKI / X-RAY), Piotr Orzechowski and Kuba Więcek (ANA 021 THEMES OF DRACULA). That project, which was the first step towards a wide promotion of the ANAKLASIS label in the Land of Cherry Blossom, met with much audience interest and enthusiasm, thus confirming the international potential of Polish music.
For ANAKLASIS fifth birthday, PWM in collaboration with Polish Radio Kraków holds an autumnal concert series titled ANAKLASIS ON THE AIR. #SHARPENYOUREARS FOR RADIO KRAKÓW. The concerts can be attended live in the studio, but they are also broadcast live and rebroadcast on the radio as well as streamed online. The concerts have presented material from our highly popular orange REVISIONS series, featuring music by the greatest Polish composers in modern reinterpretations by outstanding jazz and classical artists.
What Next?ANAKLASIS recognises and promotes the value of Polish music. It popularises contemporary music among audiences that are open to exploration and new challenges. It also appeals to those listeners who cherish masterful, top-standard interpretations of the classics.
