AGNIESZKA BUDZIŃSKA- BENNETT

She graduated in musicology from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (PhD in 2010) and from Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (early music voice studies at the class of Dominique Vellard and Richard Levitt; postgraduate studies with Evelyn Tubb and Anthony Rooley; medieval harp with Heidrun Rosenzweig). She developed her skills with Emma Kirkby, Ansy Boothroyd, Barbara Thornton, Benjamin Bagby, and Stefan Haselhoff. In 2001–2004 she completed postgraduate courses in musicology (with Wulf Arlt) and Scandinavian studies at the University of Basel. Founder of Ensemble Peregrina, Budzińska-- Bennett also collaborates with such early music ensembles as Perlaro, Dragma, La Cetra, as well as Polish Radio Choir and Capella Cracoviensis.

She has recorded for such labels as Raumklang, Glossa, Ramée, Divox, Tacet, Brilliant Classics, and Pan Classics. She led two large recording projects: the 10CD series Mikołaj Gomółka: Melodie na psałterz polski. Opera Omnia (Polish Radio) and the complete works of Wacław of Szamotuły (Raumklang). She made her stage debut at Theater Basel in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (2003/2004). She also performs contemporary music (world premiere of Gerald Bennett’s Columba nitens, 2015). Lecturer at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (liturgical music and 12th-century music history), the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen, and Universität Freiburg, she has also taught masterclasses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as well as in Würzburg, Oslo, Leipzig, and many Polish universities and academies.

She publishes papers on early music in, among others, Early Music and Basler Jahrbuch für Historische Musikpraxis. She also published (in Polish) a book titled Subtilitas. Audible and Inaudible Aspects of Ars Antiqua Motets (Poznań 2012). The artist’s accolades include nominations for the 2022 REMA (Réseau Européen de Musique Ancienne) Ambassador of the Year and the 2021 Polish Public Media Award, Decoration of Honour ‘Meritorious for Polish Culture’, and the Małopolska Cross – Silver Decoration of Honour awarded by the Małopolska Province.
