New Music Orchestra

Founded in 1996, it is one of the oldest Polish ensembles specialising in contemporary music. The orchestra was conducted at first by Aleksander Lasoń. Under the artistic direction of Szymon Bywalec since 2006, it has gradually transformed from a group of enthusiastic students into a professional ensemble which can perform the most formidable scores.

The orchestra has performed works by such eminent Polish and foreign composers as Helmut Lachenmann, Louis Andriessen, Kaija Saariaho, Per Nørgård, Bent Sørensen, and others, collaborating with excellent soloists (Jakob Kullberg, Ashot Sarkissjan, Marco Blaauw, Michelle Marelli, Rafał Zambrzycki-Payne) and conductors focusing on new music (Daniel Kawka, François-Xavier Roth, Jean Deroyer, Christopher Austin, Steven Loy, Ivan Buffa, and Wojciech Michniewski).

OMN has made over 200 world and Polish premiere recordings of the greatest contemporary works. The orchestra is a regular guest at the most important festivals, such as the Warsaw Autumn, Musica Polonica Nova, the Festival of Premieres – Polish Modern Music in Katowice, Nostalgia Festival, Katowice Kultura Natura, Beijing Modern Music Festival, Melos-Étos, Klang-Festival, NottNOISE New Music Marathon, and Hindsgavl Festival.

OMN’s discography comprises several dozen concert and studio recordings released largely under such labels as Aurora, Decca, DUX, CD Accord, Anaklasis, Kairos, Requiem Records, and ZKP–POLMIC.
