Negar Bouban

Iranian musicologist, composer, and oud performance expert, she graduated in architecture from the University of Tehran and studied Persian music theory at Alzahra University (obtaining her doctorate from that school). Her research concerns the theory and practice of Iranian music as reflected in 10th- to 16th-century treatises, wall and miniature paintings, as well as interdisciplinary studies combining musicology and linguistics.

Bouban learned to play the oud (a traditional Near Eastern plucked string instrument, considered as the lute’s predecessor) with Mansour Nariman, who also helped her study the radif (old Persian musical tune and theme collection). Bouban has performed classical Persian music solo and with various ensembles ever since, recording it for record labels and the radio. As an instrumentalist, she studies improvisation practice, both in its traditional (dastgāh) and free form. Her first solo album Continu (2008) has been followed by four other original releases.

As an educator, Bouban worked at Tehran’s IRIB University (2003–2005 and 2012), Shiraz University (2008–2016), and the University of Tehran (2001–2005 and 2015–2019).
