Oleh Krysa
Oleh Krysa is a Ukrainian-American violinist and teacher. He began studying the violin in Lviv with Konstantin Mikhailov. In 1960 he entered the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, graduating from David Oistrakh’s class in 1965 and completing postgraduate studies under him two years later.
His successes at international competitions include second prize at the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Poznań in 1962; first prize at the Premio Paganini in Genoa in 1963; third prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1966; and joint second prize, shared with Gidon Kremer, at the Montreal International Music Competition in 1969.
From 1967 Krysa was a soloist with the Kyiv Philharmonic, combining his performing career with teaching at the Kyiv Conservatory. Afterwards he became first violinist of Moscow’s Beethoven Quartet and took up the corresponding post at the Gnesins Musical and Pedagogical Institute in Moscow; soon he joined the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory as Professor of Violin.
Having emigrated to the United States in 1989, Krysa continued an intensive international concert career. In 1993 he joined the faculty of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he is now Professor Emeritus of Violin.
Krysa has given the world premieres of numerous works, many of them written for and dedicated to him, including works by such composers as Alfred Schnittke, Valentin Silvestrov, Myroslav Skoryk, and Vyacheslav Artyomov.
