Robert Satanowski
Robert Satanowski was a Polish conductor. Before the Second World War, he was educated at Warsaw University of Technology. From 1948 to 1951 he studied conducting at the State Higher Schools of Music in Sopot (with Bohdan Wodiczko) and in Łódź. Between 1958 and 1960 he undertook advanced training at the Komische Oper Berlin under Walter Felsenstein, and also studied with Herbert von Karajan.
His appointments in Poland – as conductor, director or artistic director – took him to philharmonic orchestras and opera houses in Lublin, Poznań, Bydgoszcz, Kraków, and Warsaw. Abroad, he was director of the opera company and orchestra in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz); Generalmusikdirektor of the Vereinigte Städtische Bühnen Krefeld und Mönchengladbach, with responsibility for its symphony orchestra and opera companies; and a conductor with the opera company in Aachen.
Opera lay at the heart of Satanowski’s career. At the companies he ran, he cultivated a wide-ranging repertory, including numerous works by twentieth- century composers.
He served as president of the Association of Polish Musicians. His distinctions included the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta. In 1988, in recognition of his wartime service as a former commander of a partisan formation and a colonel in the Polish Army, he was appointed a brigadier general on the retired list.
