WARSAW PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
As a professional choir, it began to perform in 1953 under Zbigniew Soja. Its successive directors have been: Roman Kuklewicz (1955–1971), Józef Bok (1971–1974), Antoni Szaliński (1974–1978), Henryk Wojnarowski (1978–2016), and Bartosz Michałowski (since January 2017).
The Choir’s main function is to accompany the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in symphonic and vocal-instrumental concerts, as well as giving a cappella performances at Warsaw Philharmonic. It has also appeared with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, RIAS, Milan’s Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, and many others, under the most eminent Polish and foreign conductors and composers.
The Choir’s repertoire comprises more than 400 large scale vocal-instrumental and unaccompanied works from different historical periods. In April 2009 the Choir won the Fryderyk Award (‘Album of the Year – Choral and Oratorio Music’) for the first CD in the DUX edition of Stanisław Moniuszko’s masses. In May 2010, the second album in the same cycle received the ‘Orphée d’Or’ Arturo Toscanini me-morial award of the French Académie du Disque Lyrique for ‘the best phonographic initiative.’
