Joanna Freszel
A soprano born in Warsaw; graduate of the Chopin University of Music.
She has for many years given concerts with the best Polish chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras. Freszel has specialised in the interpretation of contemporary music, including works by George Crumb, György Ligeti, Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, Igor Stravinsky, and Paweł Mykietyn. She has premiered compositions by Arvo Pärt, Marko Nikodijević, Uri Caine, Eugeniusz Knapik, Aleksander Nowak, and Salvatore Sciarrino. Apart from most recent music, she has also successfully performed Baroque, Classical and Romantic repertoires. She has sung as a guest artist at opera houses in Poland and throughout Europe.
In 2019–2023 she taught at the Department of Vocal and Acting Studies of the Chopin University, since 2023 – at the Academy of Music in Kraków. She obtained her DMA doctoral degree in 2019. She is also the author of the educational syllabuses poGŁOSka and samoŚPIEW. The singer’s debut album Real Life Song (2015), dedicated to Polish contemporary music, was granted Orphée d’Or award. It was followed by the release of A Polish Songbook (with Łukasz Chrzęszczyk, Orphée Classics 2020), and Akwarelle (songs by Ludomir Różycki and Grażyna Bacewicz, recorded with Bartłomiej Kominek, DUX 2021). Freszel also features on recordings of Aleksander Nowak’s operas for Anaklasis label Drach and Ahat-ilī – Sister of Gods (the latter won the Fryderyk Award in 2021). In 2017 Freszel received the Polityka’s Passport prize.
