Piotr Orzechowski

Born in 1990, a jazz pianist and composer. One of the most frequently awarded jazz musicians of the young generation studied at Krakow’s Academy of Music, and later at Berklee College of Music. He also graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

His numerous accolades include: the 1st prize in the prestigious Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition (Switzerland, 2011) and Jazz Hoeilaart (Belgium, 2011). He also won the Grand Prix Jazz Melomani (2012, 2014), Onet Cultural Award ‘O!Lśnienie’ (2017) for 24 Preludes & Improvisations, nominations for the Coryphaeus of Polish Music Award, Fryderyk Awards, and the ‘Guarantees of Culture’ award of TVP Kultura state television channel. Ever since his much-publicised success in Montreux, he has given performances worldwide. His solo albums are released under the Decca Classics label.

As an improviser and composer, Orzechowski combines elements of many musical styles, forms and genres in a highly unique and original manner, subjecting them to creative analyses and bold reinterpretations. He has collaborated with the most outstanding personalities in contemporary classical music (Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Krzysztof Knittel, Krzysztof Penderecki) and jazz (Randy Brecker, Avishai Cohen, Victor Mendoza, Michał Urbaniak, Carlos Zíngaro). He has played with such leading Polish orchestras as the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice (NOSPR), AUKSO Chamber Orchestra of the City of Tychy, and the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw. He is also the founder of High Definition Quartet.

Orzechowski’s discography includes, among others, three solo albums released as Pianohooligan, three with High Definition, and music performed on Rhodes piano: Bach Rewrite with Marcin Masecki and Capella Cracoviensis – an interpretation of harpsichord concertos, and Works for Rhodes Piano & Strings, where, with the accompaniment of AUKSO, he interprets works by Zygmunt Krauze, Sławomir Kupczak, Aleksander Nowak, and Marcin Stańczyk.
