Agata Zubel

A charismatic soprano and composer, she graduated in composition from Jan Antoni Wichrowski’s class and in solo voice from Danuta Paziuk-Zipser’s class at Wrocław’s Karol Lipiński Academy of Music. She then studied at the Conservatorium Hogeschool Enschede. She is now a professor at her alma mater in Wrocław.

As a composer she combines concepts originating in the 1950s and 1960s with more recent ones such as electroacoustic techniques. Her works have been awarded in competitions, including the 2013 International Rostrum of Composers (Not I for voice, instrumental ensemble, and electronics) and the European Composition Award for Fireworks for great symphony orchestra (2018). Her other major works include: Cascando for voice, flute, clarinet, violin, and cello; Chapter 13 for voice and instrumental ensemble; Double Battery for instrumental ensemble with augmented sound space, as well as Bildbeschreibung (an opera-form).

The artist’s accolades include, apart from competition prizes, also Polityka’s Passport Award (2005), the Wrocław Music Award ‘Polonica Nova’ (2014), the Coryphaeus of Polish Music (2016), and the Erste Bank Kompositionspreis (2018). She has won three Fryderyk Awards for her albums Cascando (2010) and Oresteia (Anaklasis, 2024) as well as her vocal recital Apparition (2020).
