Jorgos Skolias
Eminent Polish singer of Greek descent, music composer and text author; an improviser using the polyphonic singing technique. One of the most original personalities in Polish music, associated with jazz and the related genres, blues, rock, and the ethnic music scene. His voice can be heard on more than 60 albums.
He played blues rock in Wrocław in the 1970s, joined Krzak band in 1982, collaborated with Osjan, and in 1988–1991 sang in the youth jazz band Young Power. He performed in duos with Radosław Nowakowski, Bogdan Hołownia, and Bronisław Duży, reinterpreted Ray Charles’s output with Paweł Kaczmarek, and worked with such bands as Voo Voo, Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa, Dżem, and Audiofeeling. Each of his collaborations is unique and original, moving in the borderline regions between different styles.
Skolias explores centuries-old vocal techniques, creates and develops new ways of using the human voice in music. He teaches vocal workshops, for instance during the Voicingers festivals. On theatre productions he has collaborated with Jarosław Pijarowski’s Theatre of Creation, the TVP Television Theatre, the Słowacki and Bagatela theatres in Cracow. In 2013–2015 he co-edited the ‘spoken magazine’ ‘Gadający Pies’ (‘Talking Dog’).
