PROGRAMME V // THE UNFINISHED JOURNEY
ANA 003 AV
Andrzej Krzanowski, a Silesian accordionist and composer, pupil of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, died prematurely aged less than forty. He left behind many symphonic, chamber and vocal-instrumental music works. One of those latter is the meta-opera Programme V, whose world premiere only took place in September 2018 at the ‘Warsaw Autumn’.
RELIEFS
ANA 019
The Stalowa Wola composers, also known as Generation ’51, hold a separate place in Polish contemporary music, one that justly deserves to be remembered. What Aleksander Lasoń, Andrzej Krzanowski, and Eugeniusz Knapik have in common is that they first came to public attention at the 1970s’ ‘Young Musicians for the Young City’ festival in Stalowa Wola, but also that they presented an ambivalent attitude to the avant-garde, drawing on its achievements but avoiding a rigid doctrinaire approach, and they let their music sound at least a note of romanticism.
SIREN. MELODRAMA AETERNA
ANA 017
Drach’s element was the earth. With their next joint project, Aleksander Nowak and Szczepan Twardoch pay homage to water, though the true object of their artistic contemplation is the journey as a longing for change and a quest for meaning in life.
SONGS & SONNETS
ANA 010
"Singing and vocal music have accompanied me since my early childhood" – says Romuald Twardowski, born in 1930 in Vilnius. – "Popular tunes, songs hummed by my mother, the sounds of church choirs – all those things were invigorating my imagination."
SONGS | ARIAS | OVERTURES THE BEST 20TH CENTURY RECORDINGS
ANA 006
“The Best of…” compilations are a product of long-established music markets. They caught on when the catalogues of popular composers’ and performers’ albums became too large to follow even for the most fervent fans looking for their favourite numbers.
SONGS OF SILESIA
ANA 033
The album SONGS OF SILESIA comprises a collection of the Silesian master’s vocal pieces, which perfectly reflect his broad horizons. Szalonek was a visionary and an innovator, but also an artist inspired by local folklore ('On Johnnie’s Cathy', 'Katowice Ballad', 'From Opole Region', 'Silesian Folk Ballad' for solo soprano and mixed choir) and by religious subjects ('Litany of Loreto – to the Blessed Virgin Mary', 'Miserere'). His music could be charmingly simple or extraordinarily complex. On this album, it is performed by Camerata Silesia Katowice City Singers’ Ensemble under Anna Szostak.
SYMPHONIES
ANA 038
The album is an encounter with the history of NOSPR orchestra and the music of Tadeusz Baird (1928–1981), one of Poland’s key twentieth-century composers, co-founder of Group’49 and the Warsaw Autumn festival, as well as author of music for many films.
