BI-PIANO RECITAL

The eminent composer and pianist Zygmunt Krauze claims that he shunned Fryderyk Chopin through much of his artistic life. When he finally realised that he could not avoid facing that music, rather than piously worshipping the national saint he is getting to grips with Chopin’s art on his own terms. On our album, he performs each of the Chopin pieces on two pianos, the first one sounding traditional, the other – prepared in accordance with John Cage’s instructions found in the score of his Sonatas and Interludes. Stripped of its sweet tonality and enriched with improvisations, Chopin’s music takes a look at itself here in the looking-glass of contemporary music, and this mirror reflection, through a shift of accent from harmony to the rhythmic structure of the works, surprisingly brings to mind the African heritage and ways of thinking. The CD programme also includes Krauze’s own original works, Stone Music and Gloves Music, as well as Cage’s Water Music. These pieces do not call for a faithful and precise reproduction of the score, but for just the opposite – courage and a creative interpretation.
