Sebastian Szumski

Bass-baritone, he graduated from Marek Rzepka’s singing class at Cracow’s Academy of Music, as well as taking part in numerous master classes. Already as a chorister in the Boys’ and Men’s Choir of Poznań Philharmonic he performed in the most important venues and at music festivals in Poland and worldwide. For many years he has been much sought-after as a performer of songs and parts in large-scale vocal-instrumental repertoire.

His opera debut took place in 2008 during the Barbican Music Festival in Cracow, where he appeared as Count Almaviva in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. His talent was confirmed in later years by awards in vocal competitions and invitations to perform in Italian opera houses. He has given recitals in Poland and abroad with such outstanding pianists as Andrzej Tatarski, Marcin Koziak, and Piotr Różański, under the baton of leading masters: Krzysztof Penderecki, Stefan Stuligrosz, Piotr Sułkowski, Federico Maria Sardelli, Alessandro de Marchi, Paul McCreesh, Joshua Rifkin, Andrew Parrott, Vincent Dumestre, and Fabio Bonizzoni.

His repertoire comprises music from the Renaissance to contemporary. As a keen performer of early music, especially of the Baroque period, he has appeared with such ensembles as Arte dei Suonatori, Le Poème Harmonique, and La Risonanza; he currently performs with Capella Cracoviensis. The artist has recorded extensively for the radio, television, and record labels.

In 2019 he obtained a doctorate from his alma mater, based on a dissertation dedicated to analyses of bass arias in the works of G.F. Händel.
