Stanisław Wisłocki
Stanisław Wisłocki was a Polish conductor, pianist, teacher and composer. He studied the piano with Wanda Cyrbes at the Fryderyk Chopin Institute of Music in Przemyśl and conducted the male choir at the local Kazimierz Morawski secondary school. He continued his musical education with Seweryn Barbag at the Lwów Conservatory. At the conservatory in Timișoara, Romania, he studied composition and conducting, as well as piano; in Bucharest, he came under the artistic guidance of George Enescu.
On his return to Poland in 1945, Wisłocki settled in Warsaw. There he helped to establish the Polish Folk Orchestra and became its first conductor; from 1946 the ensemble was known as the Polish Chamber Orchestra. In November 1947 he founded the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra, serving as its artistic director and founding principal conductor. He also held posts as a conductor with the Warsaw Philharmonic and as general and artistic director of the Grand Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. In Caracas, he was a co-founder and conductor of the Orquesta Filarmónica Nacional.
An outstanding interpreter of Classical and Romantic music, he was also behind numerous world premières of contemporary Polish works. His exceptionally busy conducting career led him to abandon composition comparatively early. Teaching, too, was necessarily relegated to second place, although over a forty-two-year career he trained fifty conductors.
