Performers

Cezary Duchnowski

One of the most fascinating computer, algorithmic and improvised music composers. He studied composition with Leszek Wisłocki at Wrocław’s Academy of Music. He focuses on computer music; among others, he co-founded the Computer Music Composition Studio at his alma mater. From the beginning of his career he has also created performances and improvisations.

Duchnowski frequently combines the role of composer with that of performer. In 1997 he founded with Marcin Rupociński the Morphai group, concentrating on para-theatrical projects. He composes and performs with Agata Zubel as ElettroVoce duo. He is also a member of Phonos ek Mechanes (with Paweł Hendrich and Sławomir Kupczak), a group performing the so-called human-electronics, in which computers are controlled by electro-acoustic instruments.

Virtually every piece by Duchnowski features a computer or electronic media, which extends his possibilities of composing sounds far more interesting than those of independent acoustic instruments. A computer is also a handy tool in the composition process; it can generate, among others, a system of symmetrical number lists corresponding to the harmonic structures or section lengths in his music (for instance, 1 5 1, 2 4 2, 3 3 3 for violin, cello and computer, 2011).

Duchnowski’s accolades include: the 1st prize of the International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music (IREM) in Rome for monad 3 (2004), as well as the Award of the Polish Composers’ Union for outstanding achievements in the field of electronic music and for his teaching work (2012). Major compositions: the cycles monads 1–5 (2001–2006); the opera Martha’s Garden (2006), Reality on Braces Stretched from the Window for 2 pianos, strings and computer (2008).
