Cezary Duchnowski
One of the most intriguing contemporary artists working in the fields of algorithmic composition and computer music, Duchnowski is also a performance artist and improviser. He studied composition with Leszek Wisłocki at Wrocław’s Karol Lipiński Academy of Music, where he is now a faculty member. He co-initiated that Academy’s Computer Composition Studio. In 2024 he was granted the state title of professor.
Duchnowski frequently combines the roles of composer and performer. With Marcin Rupociński he created paratheatrical projects as Morphai (est. 1997). With Agata Zubel they give performances and create music as ElettroVoce duo. With Paweł Hendrich and Sławomir Kupczak he co-forms Phonos ek Mechanes human-electronics group, which creates electronics based on computers controlled by acoustic instruments.
Duchnowski’s works have been presented at major Polish and foreign contemporary music festivals, including the Warsaw Autumn and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. He won the 1st prize in the International Rostrum of Electroacoustic Music in Rome for monad 3 (2004) and the Award of the Polish Composers’ Union for outstanding achievements in electronic music and education (2012). His major compositions include the cycle of monads 1–5 (2001–2006), the opera Martha’s Garden (2006) and Reality on Braces Stretched from the Window for two pianos, strings and computer (2008).
